The Father Of Modern Linguistics, Edward Sapir, Characterized
The father of modern linguistics, Edward Sapir, characterized language as ââ¬Å"purely human and non-instinctiveâ⬠, for unlike our innate ability to walk, such a hominid mechanism of complex thought-expression is a learned skill achieved through culture. This exclusively human ability is essential to oneââ¬â¢s core identity, as explored by Chicana cultural theorist Gloria Anzaldua in How to Tame a Wild Tongue, in which she recalls being rejected for her native bilingual tongue by native Mexicans and White Americans, unable to fit in with either culture. Here, we see that language is a unique expression of identity -- adaptive and Taoist in its nature in that tone, diction, vocabulary, and dialect are manifestations of oneââ¬â¢s emotions, personality,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran wrote in his book Anathemas and Admirations, ââ¬Å"One does not inhabit a country; one inhabits a language. That is our country, our fatherland ââ¬â and no o ther.â⬠It is then no surprise that much like the ancient world kingdoms who destroyed idols and devastated a regionââ¬â¢s inhabitants to erase their conquered foesââ¬â¢ identities, we see the ââ¬Å"definersâ⬠in Beloved attempt to suppress the language that which the ââ¬Å"definedâ⬠inhabits. Cioranââ¬â¢s radical, etymological awareness of how language can shape our identity, society, and perception of the world ââ¬â our Platoââ¬â¢s cave -- is explored in detail through theories of linguistic relativity. For example, how native English speakers perceive the time continuum as horizontal as a result of front/back terminology (e.g. ââ¬Å"The past is now behind usâ⬠) whereas native Mandarin speakers perceive time as vertical as a result of up/down terminology, looking up to the future and down to the past (Boroditsky). Linguistic relativity is often seen as a grounded, or ââ¬Å"weakâ⬠, version of the now widely disregarded Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. But while the hypothesis is not scientific fact, itââ¬â¢s exploration of language and societal-building correlation provide a philosophical, Malcolm Gladwell-esque observation of the world. The use of language as a means of controlling perception of the world in Beloved takes root in our real-world history with theShow MoreRelatedIntercultural Communication21031 Words à |à 85 PagesI. Using teaching styles to make positive contributions in physical education Free Essays
The usage of appropriate instruction manners makes an of import part to kids ââ¬Ës acquisition in physical instruction. Different instruction manners affect many facets of instruction and acquisition, including the acquisition environment and the instructor ââ¬Ës ability to run into single demands. As physical instruction has a broad spectrum of aims harmonizing to Macfayden A ; Bailey ( 2002 ) instructors should utilize a broad assortment of learning manners to guarantee that students achieve the broad assortment of techniques and accomplishments that physical instruction has to offer. We will write a custom essay sample on Using teaching styles to make positive contributions in physical education or any similar topic only for you Order Now This survey will see the assorted definitions associated with the subject and pay specific attending to the spectrum of learning manners proposed by Mosston A ; Ashworth ( 1986 ) . The survey will so specifically concentrate on usage of the productive and generative manners by analyzing my ain experience against findings from literature. The model for learning manners and behaviors came from work by Mosston ( 1966 ) . The thoughts that Mosston proposed hold changed and adapted since the first publication of the model. The interaction between instructor and pupil has been developed since his initial publication ( Mosston A ; Ashworth, 1986 ) and have provided a model where the determinations are the chief component and the relationship between the instructor and the scholar has in doing those determinations. So influential was it that the work by Nixon A ; Locke ( 1973 ) described it as ââ¬Å" the most important progress in the theory of physical instruction teaching method in recent history â⬠. A instruction manner is concerned with how an activity is delivered, instead than what is delivered, ( Macfadyen A ; Bailey, 2002 ) . Research conducted by Siendentop ( 1991 ) has besides suggested that ââ¬Å" a instruction manner is typified by the instructional and managerial clime that exists during the lesson which can be observed in the chief that the instructor interacts with the students and in some instances if there is an interaction at all â⬠. The Spectrum incorporates 10 landmark manners based on the grade to which the instructor or the pupil assumes duty for what happens in a lesson. This describes a continuum, where at one extreme is the direct, teacher-led attack and at the other lies a much more open-ended and student-centred manner where the instructor acts merely in a facilitator function. Generative Teaching Manners: The generative or direct bunch includes the bid, pattern, mutual, self cheque and inclusion instruction manners ( Mosston A ; Ashworth, 2002 ) . Direct manners of learning require the scholar to reproduce known stuff or cognition by retroflexing a specific theoretical account. This frequently involves capable affair associating to concrete facts, regulations or specific skills/movements ( Rink, 2002 ) . In order for students to animate specific accomplishments Derri A ; Pachta ( 2007 ) identified that ââ¬Å" scholars must foremost be provided with a right proficient theoretical account to emulate, sufficient clip to pattern the theoretical account and effectual feedback related to the original theoretical account â⬠, with the right proficient theoretical account frequently being shown by the instructor. Research conducted by Pieron ( 1998 ) supports the usage of the bid learning manner as the writer argues that copying the most efficient manner ( that of the instructors pres entation ) is extremely profitable. It is seen as more profitable because it saves clip as the instructor has the overall duty for rectifying mistakes and it ensures that students receive accurate feedback. The research conducted by Salvara et Al ( 2006 ) highlighted that ââ¬Å" the direct instruction manners specifically the bid manner has been shown to hold a positive impact on category control and motor public presentation â⬠. Within my instruction I have found that utilizing this manner of learning to be the most effectual for category control particularly when the category has a big figure of students and when the category requires a batch of behaviour direction schemes used to command to the category. However Pellett A ; Blakemore ( 1997 ) conducted a survey of undertaking presentation and content public presentation of four instructors who all had difference degrees of experience and found that pupils taught by an experient instructor were more effectual at executing the accomplishments when compared to being taught by a instructor of small experience. My experience whilst on instructor preparation has besides supported these findings as I was able to show the undertakings more clearly to pupils when I had more experience in that peculiar activity. I was besides able to distinguish the undertaking to a higher degree with activities that I was familiar with as I had more thoughts and experience to pull upon, whereas with activities I had small experience of I found it more ambitious to be originative and come on the students. This has resulted in me taking actions towards seeking to better capable cognition in countries of the course of study where my experience is missing or deficient. Research conducted by Griffey ( 1983 ) has found that when practising accomplishments pupils of lower ability benefited more from the bid manner of learning as they had small old experience to pull from. This is something that I have besides noticed, when learning lower ability groups it is more good to give the direction or presentation of undertaking to salvage clip and when working with higher ability students leting the more able students to show the accomplishment to increase pupil motive. These findings have non been supported by Goldberger A ; Gerney ( 1990 ) who found that under circuit preparation conditions the lower ability students seemed to profit more from the chance to do determinations about clip spent practising at each station. However within this survey the pattern manner of instruction has besides been examined. Harmonizing to Byra ( 2000 ) ââ¬Å" in the pattern manner of learning the scholars work at their ain gait and complete instructor designed undertakings in the order they choose, the category is organised around Stationss and the instructor provides single feedback to the scholars â⬠. The most effectual type of pattern manner of learning I have used whilst on learning experience was the usage of circuit preparation as I chose the activities/skills/tasks to be practiced at each station and the students chose the strength to which they performed as each station. In a survey by Beckett ( 1991 ) on college age pupils the pattern manner has proved to be really effectual in advancing motor accomplishment alterations. From my experience of utilizing this manner I discovered that it was non peculiarly utile at advancing larning when there was limited clip or big groups as different ability students will come on at different times and take longer with certain accomplishments. However th e ages of students should be taken into consideration as my experience is from working with students aged 11-16 who because they are more susceptible to development in motor accomplishments than college aged pupils. This may explicate why Beckett did non detect any alterations in motor accomplishments as the topic in his survey may hold already to the full developed. My experience has besides been identified and supported by Goldberger A ; Gerney ( 1986 ) A ; Goldberger et Al ( 1982 ) . However I did happen this manner of learning utile during a wellness and fittingness unit of work where the sum of accomplishment acquisition was minimum and the chief focal point on the lesson was for students to be active utilizing circuit preparation and the acquisition was aimed at students being introduced to new cognition or deriving a farther apprehension of current cognition on different types of exercisings instead than developing accomplishments. The mutual manner has besides been examined by Goldberger A ; Gerney ( 1986 ) A ; Goldberger et Al ( 1982 ) . These research workers identified that in this manner the scholars work in braces to accomplish the results. The instructor ââ¬Ës ability to give effectual instruction/information is of import when utilizing this manner as when one scholar performs the other observes and gives feedback to the performing artist particular to the direction that the instructor gives at the start of the undertaking and when the performing artist completes the undertaking the scholars switch functions. From my experience the most effectual ways of giving direction are in the signifier of a presentation or a criteria sheet, I besides found that presentations are really effectual when showing accomplishments that I can demo high degrees of competency. In add-on to improved skill public presentation Goldberger ( 1992 ) besides found that ââ¬Å" scholars in the mutual manner provided more feedba ck, expressed more empathy, offered more congratulations and encouragement and requested more feedback from each other when compared to a control group â⬠. However from my experience of this manner the coupling of students is of import as if you pair students of different degrees the feedback would either be to complex or excessively simple therefore impacting the sum of acquisition and skill public presentation. Besides when working with pupils/groups where behaviour direction is an issue it is more good for the instructor to partner off the students harmonizing to ability instead than allowing students pick their spouse as this tends to take to the students picking friends and being distracted and traveling off undertaking. I have besides found that the manner in which you give the direction besides can hold an consequence on the lesson as undertaking sheets frequently do nââ¬â¢t work with groups where behaviour direction is an issue as they do non react good to the resou rce and see it as something to mess about with instead than an educational tool. Byra A ; Marks ( 1993 ) conducted a survey which focuses on the mutual manner and the effects that different couplings had on students battle. This survey highlighted students who were identified as friends gave more effectual and specific feedback due to their comfort degrees being higher as they were working with a friend. The writers besides found that grouping by ability had no consequence on the sum of feedback given or the comfort degree which is in understanding with my ain personal experiences. This surveies findings suggests that student working with friends is good nevertheless this survey does non take into history the behavior of the group which I have experienced can be a major lending fact when partner offing students. I have experienced when leting students to work in friendship braces can sometimes be damaging when they feel the undertaking is non honoring or good as they distract each other and sometimes do nââ¬â¢t finish the undertaking. I have found that to partner off students with friends is good merely when you have built a resonance with the students and are cognizant of how they react working with friends. My experience of this manner is that it is besides good to utilize when measuring students supplying they are cognizant of the rating standards they can have more feedback th erefore bettering public presentation when compared to other direct instruction manners. In support of this Cox ( 1986 ) found that when comparing the mutual manner against the bid and pattern manners that the sum of accomplishment motions was really similar which was surprising as the mutual manner involves a batch more feedback. It was besides found that three times the figure of feedback statements were offered to performing artists utilizing the mutual manner ensuing in higher accomplishments and cognition additions along with the development of societal relationship accomplishments. Harmonizing to Byra A ; Jenkins ( 1998 ) within the inclusion manner of learning scholars choose the degree of trouble within a undertaking and measure their ain accomplishment public presentation. With this in head the benefits of the inclusion manner are that it provides students with the chance to prosecute in activity that is to their appropriate skill/knowledge degree potentially increasing inclusion and battle. My experience of utilizing this manner of instruction is that I have attempted to include it in all of my lessons as guaranting all students are included is indispensable to any lesson. However when leting students to decided which skill degree they work at frequently resulted in students taking a degree that is non appropriate whether that be to simple or excessively complex. This goes against the spectrum theory which suggests that ââ¬Å" the status provided by the inclusion manner should advance success for all scholars â⬠( Mosston A ; Ashworth, 1994 ) . The findings of Goldberger A ; Gerney ( 1986 ) A ; Goldberger et Al ( 1982 ) has supported my experience and observed that the bulk of scholars made inappropriate and uneffective determinations for their accomplishment degree by taking degrees that were excessively complex for them to make success or the aims even when encouraged or prompted by the instructor. From this I have learned to put boundaries for those students that make the undertaking to hard so for illustration when throwing and catching puting a maximal or minimal distance they can throw the ball. My experience has besides taught me that this manner is most effectual when used with older students as they have a better ego construct of their ain ability and are less susceptible to peer force per unit area this was besides observed by Beckett ( 1991 ) . In survey of college aged pupils Beckett ( 1991 ) found that the inclusion manner to be every bit effectual as the pattern manner for scholar accomplishment public prese ntation when larning motor accomplishments. These happening do non back up the decisions of Goldberger A ; Gerney ( 1986 ) A ; Goldberger et Al ( 1982 ) and it was suggested that the difference in pupils ages as a contributing factor which supports my experience. My experience of the Inclusion manner has besides highlighted the importance of planning and appraisal for the lesson as I have already identified that students sometimes do nââ¬â¢t do the right determinations. Therefore as a consequence of this I found it good to measure the students who set boundaries and ends that may be above or below their degree and students who do non work good together and so be after a scheme into the following lesson to guarantee that those students remain focussed and on undertaking. Productive Teaching Manners: When compared to the generative instruction manner the productive bunch of Mosston A ; Ashworth ( 1994 ) spectrum of learning manners has small background research. The productive bunch requires the scholar to bring forth new cognition, from my experience the instructor needs a high degree of understanding and creativeness to make or plan scenarios. Harmonizing to Byra ( 2000 ) ââ¬Å" within the productive manners of learning students should prosecute in cognitive operations like job resolution, originative thought, contriving and critical thought to detect new motions â⬠. It is the duty of the instructor to supply clip for cognitive processing hence at that place needs to be a category clime focused on seeking and analyzing and feedback for bring forthing different solutions instead than the same generic response ( Mosston A ; Ashworth, 2002 ) . Harmonizing to Mosston A ; Ashworth ( 1986 ) ââ¬Å" six instruction manners have been identified in the productive bunch they are guided find and convergent find which both require convergent thought from the scholars and divergent production, single plan scholar design, scholar initiated and self learning which require divergent thought from scholars â⬠. The bulk of the research in this country has studied the effects of the divergent find, convergent find and guided find. In a survey by Cleland A ; Gallahue ( 1993 ) divergent motion forms were observed to set up baseline information and to analyze the different factors that contribute to a kid ââ¬Ës production of divergent motion. The findings highlighted that scholars could modify, follow and unite cardinal motion forms to bring forth divergent motion. In a farther survey Cleland ( 1994 ) compared the divergent find manner against the bid manner and a no direction control group to analyze the scholars ability to bring forth divergent motion. The findings of this survey were that pupils generated a greater figure of divergent motions under the divergent find status. The research worker concluded that using critical thought in the signifier of the divergent find manner positively effects scholars ability to bring forth a higher measure of divergent motion forms. My experience of utilizing this instruction manner is that the students age/maturity and experience degrees are major lending factors as scholars with low degrees of experience have limited capable cognition to pull from therefore impacting their ability to modify current skills/movement my experience has besides been supported by the findings of Cleland A ; Gallahue ( 1993 ) . As the old research suggests a pupils ability to believe critically is of import within the productive bunch of learning manners, wish this in head Cleland A ; Pearse ( 1995 ) conducted a survey which examined the methods that physical instruction instructors use to guarantee that students use critical thought. Critical thought has been defined by McBride ( 1992 ) as ââ¬Å" brooding thought is used to do sensible determinations about motion undertakings or challenges â⬠( page 115 ) . This surveies conclusion lucifer with my experience which was that this manner was most effectual when using the pattern manner of learning to give instruction/deliver the topic cognition so following guided find and convergent find to let the students to believe critically. The survey besides highlighted that ââ¬Å" the more experient instructors were able to make a more effectual environment for the students to utilize originative thought accomplishments â⬠McBride ( 1992 ) . From my experience I have besides been able to hold with these findings as I felt more comfy making an environment that was contributing to creative thought when learning a topic I had more experience in as I was able to give more effectual feedback. The research presented to this point has seemed to favor the usage of the productive instruction manners particularly when making cognitive acquisition nevertheless there is conflicting research presented by Salter A ; Graham ( 1985 ) . Salter A ; Graham ( 1985 ) examined the effects of the bid manner, guided find manner and no direction on scholars skill larning, cognitive acquisition and accomplishment efforts. The consequences showed that although their was grounds that larning occurred utilizing all three manners the students in the guided find and bid manner recorded significantly better cognitive acquisition compared to no direction. For accomplishment efforts nevertheless scholars in the no direction manner made significantly more efforts at the undertaking than scholars in the other manners. The research workers went onto recommend that a longer pattern clip than 20 proceedingss may hold resulted in the guided find holding more skill acquisition, cognitive acquisition and a ccomplishment efforts as this manner requires longer pattern clip for the full benefits to be witnessed. From my ain experience this is something which I have besides observed as students respond better when they have longer periods of clip to experiment different accomplishment motions. My experience has besides taught me that to increase the pattern clip requires effectual direction bringing which has besides been identified by Cleland A ; Pearse ( 1995 ) . Decision: In decision several research inquiries have been answered about the generative manners of instruction ; what the effects of the generative manners have on acquisition, how scholars of different ability degree are influenced by different manners, what consequence couplings have on students ability to give effectual feedback, what factors influence scholars determination devising and what consequence the different manners have on scholars ability to larn new cognition. The findings from the productive manner are ; can learners employ critical thought, what is the consequence of productive manners on scholars ability to bring forth divergent motion and how can teachers advance critical thought. The sum of research that is available for the productive manners of learning in limited when compared to the comprehensiveness of research surveies on the generative instruction manners. However, a survey by Cothran et Al. ( 2000 ) has identify that instructors reported utilizing a assortment of manner in their lessons yet merely one productive manner was in the top five manners used. Although it is promoting that instructors report utilizing a assortment these consequences must be interpreted as it suggests that instructors over estimate the assortment of learning manners used therefore impacting the sum of research there is available in relation to the productive manners of learning. Research conducted by Goldberger ( 1992 ) has identified that the ground that may stay unconvinced or unsure of the manners use is because of the deficiency of collateral research on those manners. Therefore farther research is needed into the productive manners of learning to supply instructors with a cognition base on how these manners can be effectual at advancing acquisition. Recommendations: These findings have provided an initial penetration into the usage of learning manners across a theoretically linked spectrum. One noticeable exclusion was that there is struggle within the research findings and non all research workers reported the same findings which identifies that there are a important sum of variables related to spectrum research and that the variable that is being focused on should be decently investigated by utilizing the right research method. Spectrum research needs to go on as non all findings sing premises associated to the spectrum have non been supported. However, some premises have been confirmed within this survey for illustration the mutual manner does in fact facilitate the proviso of feedback, more so than any another manner and holding scholars chose their spouses based on friendly relationships helps better societal accomplishments ( Byra A ; Marks, 1993 ) . Other premises like, the ego cheque and inclusion manners are the most effectual at advan cing cognitive development and the inclusion manner is most effectual at bettering engagement of low, medium and high ability scholars still needs to be examined. Replication surveies besides need to be conducted in different environments as the research findings and my experience would propose that the mutual manner is an effectual manner at advancing feedback. However, would it be as effectual at easing larning with different aged students in different schools where behavior direction has a far greater accent in lessons. After reexamining the appropriate relevant literature and reflecting on my ain personal experiences I feel that the usage of appropriate instruction manners makes an of import part to pupils ââ¬Ë larning in Physical Education and should non be left to opportunity. Physical Education can supply students with the chance to believe critically, job solve and to better ain acquisition. Students will be able to believe about what they are making and do determinations independently and cognize when to utilize rules such as stage dancing, games schemes and job resolution. If students are to entree the full National Curriculum for Physical Education ( NCPE ) ( DfEE/QCA, 1999 ) and to accomplish the results of high quality Physical Education ( QCA/DfES, 2005 ) , instructors must use a assortment of appropriate instruction manners to ease the chances that Physical Education offers. It is because of this that both generative and productive instruction manners should be used to heighten acquis ition and motive. Non-Profit Management and Leadership-Free-Samples for Students
Question: Identify the Importance of Strategic Management on the Non-Profit Organizations. Answer: Introduction Literature review is the secondary research that involves the researcher to go through the existing literatures on a given topic. This study identifies the importance of strategic management in non-profit organizations like charity or NGOs. This study focuses on the concept of strategic management and its impact on the non-profit organizations. It will again identify the theories of strategic management and relate it with the success of the non-profit organizations. The report stretches its focus on the nonprofit communication with the stakeholders involved in the operation. This study includes some of the important peer reviewed articles cover the above mentioned areas. They are: Wiggill, M. N. (2011). Strategic communication management in the non?profit sector: a simplified model.Journal of Public Affairs,11(4), 226-235. Scherhag, C., Boenigk, S. (2013). Different or equal treatment? Donor priority strategy and fundraising performance assessed by a propensity score matching study.Nonprofit Management and Leadership,23(4), 443-472. Malatesta, D., Smith, C. R. (2014). Lessons from resource dependence theory for contemporary public and nonprofit management.Public Administration Review,74(1), 14-25. Method Selection The review of literature can be done using various approach that are argumentative, integrative, historical, methodological systematic and theoretical. However, the approach required for this particular study is the systematic review that is a summary of available evidence pertinent to a clearly formulated research question. Aim of this approach is to record, critically evaluate and scientifically sum up all the research incorporated in the paper to define the research problem. Hence, a systematic review tries to explain the following: Identifies the extent of existing research for clarifying a particular approach Recognizes contradictions, gaps, inconsistencies and relations in the literature. Prepare conceptualization. It is to summarize the points made by the previous scholars Evaluates comments and criticizes the already developed theories. It also proposes direction for the future research. The process of carrying out a systematic review includes: Formulation of the research question Formulation of the research design Description of the theme of the research Measurement of the key variables Discussion of the finding made through the empirical literature review The journals used in the literature review re collected from the Google Scholar. This database is considered as it contains authentic resources. Moreover, extra care has been taken selecting the journals available in the database. Only the peer reviewed journals were considered for the research as it provides more authentic data. Journals describing the theories of strategic management are given priority as they helped in clearing the concept. The next priority was given to the journals that identify the benefits strategic management can provide to the nonprofit organizations. The research was kept within the limits of advantages the nonprofit organization can obtain from using strategic management and how it should be different from the for-profit organization. Literature Review (Finding and Discussion) Strategic Management and Organizational Success Hill, Jones and Schilling (2014) stated strategic management as a process that involves continuous planning, monitoring, analysis and assessment of all the necessities in an organization for meeting the goals and objectives. Organizational success on the other hand as defined by Ricciardi, Rossignoli and De Marco (2013) is the attainment of increased and sustainable results. Success in relation to nonprofit organization can take multiple forms as the success is seen from the point of view of the stakeholders that includes donors, executive directors, volunteers, staffs and clients. They have a unique public-trust function in the society that offers public benefits through private and voluntary actions. Hence, they have a multi-faceted mandate. It leads the nonprofit organization to turn to strategic management, which is a long standing practice in the business world. It is to satisfy the stakeholders essential to a nonprofit organizations success. This is because the stakeholders are the supporting pillars of the overall movement of a nonprofit organization. The stakeholders in a nonprofit ranges from clients, donors and resource providers, experts or regulators, staffs, partners or allies, constituents, policy influence targets, members, general public and the media. These stakeholders exist in both internally and externally to their respective organization, and in relation to compound organizations. Need of Strategic Management in Non-profit Organizations Nonprofit organizations have critical impact on the lives of diversified stakeholders. Hence, it requires a nonprofit organization to be strident in their operation and minimize the waste in the process. Minimizing the resources helps them in having greater impact on its stakeholders and broadcast the positivity. They also need to maintain greater transparency and accountability I their operation. These are some of the challenges now a day every nonprofit organizations face as the funding of the organizations is considerably decreasing over time. This is due to various reasons that can be identified in the existing literatures. The new paradigm identified by Kerlin and Pollak (2011) is the declination in the government funding. It had been a stable source for the nonprofits for a long period of time until recently. They now have to look for other sources to increase their resources required for continuing their operation. This issue has developed due to the increase competition in the market. A number of nonprofit organizations have started their venture on same community with similar goals. It is hence becoming a pressing issue for the donors to decide where to invest to receive a greater outcome. Balassiano and Chandler (2010) on the other hand have identified the tax challenges currently being faced by the nonprofit organizations. Rules and standards related to the tax and accounting has considerably changed in the recent years. However, the rules for the for-profit and nonprofit are not similar. The nonprofit receives tax exemptions. However, there are some criterions in the operation that needs to be followed to avail the tax exemption. Polonsky and Grau (2011) have stated that these issues are the initiators for nonprofit organizations to turn to the strategic management. It helps them in developing and determining the long-term goals, direction, programs and performance of the organization. Many of the approaches adopted in the nonprofits have been taken from the for-profit sectors. However, Polonsky and Grau (2011) have identified that the strategic management in nonprofit organization has to be different from the for-profit ones. It is due to the difference in the nature between the two types of organizations. The nonprofit organizations are more human-driven and human-focused than the for-profit ones. Theories of Strategic Management and Nonprofit Organization Balanced Scorecard Theory The balanced scorecard is used as a measuring tool used by the organizations. It is a performance metric used in the strategic management for identifying and improving various internal functions of a business and their resulting external outcome. Greilings (2010) study on the German nonprofit organizations found out that organizations implementing balanced scorecard reflects an unexpected viewpoint. It is due to the incompatibility the tool in the nonprofit. The organizations studied failed to adapt it to the distinct requirements of the nonprofit operations. Resource Dependency Theory This theory on the other hand identifies the impact of external resources of the organizations on the behavior of the organization. These external resources in case of nonprofit organizations are the donations received from the external stakeholders. The organizations behavior completely depends on the donations received from the external source. The management ensures the demands of a donor controlling the resources. Malatesta and Smith (2014) in their study identify the importance of resource dependency theory in the nonprofit organization. He stated that this provides guidance to the managers of nonprofit organizations to understand the considerations and consequences relevant to different types of inter-organizational partnering. It will in turn help the organization to choose its donors wisely and manage the operations accordingly for achieving success in their vision, mission and objective. A mixed methods study conducted by Scherhag and Boenigk (2013) on the cultural nonprofit organizations identifies the importance of communication between the organization and its donors. According to the authors, this theory helps the organizations to monitor and manage the revenue expectations, but fails to modify the marketing, outreach and other communication approaches. Strategic Communication management in Nonprofit According to Wiggill (2011), the strategic communication management focuses on the importance of engaging with stakeholders for building strong relationship with its stakeholders that will in turn assist the organization in achieving its goals. However, implementation of this on the typical nonprofit organization that regularly experiences functional constraints when compared to the realities of for-profit organization. This is because of their limited financial resources and partly because of the limited public purposes as chartered. Wiggill further identifies in her study that the nonprofit might face some of the challenges due to the inaccurate implementation of the SCM. There can be two hurdles an organization can face that are lack of fund and lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge is the greater obstacle the companies are currently facing in the process of implementation, due to the lack of understanding the purpose and benefits of SCM by the leaders. She further comments in her study that SCM is potentially capable of providing benefits to the nonprofit organization. It seeks managers of these organizations to receive training on SCM before implementing SCM in the nonprofit sector as it considerably varies from the for-profit organization. Conclusion It can be concluded from the above that the strategic management and organizational success is interrelated and can facilitates each other. However, strategic management in case of nonprofit organization will be different from the one implemented in the for-profit organization. The recent development in the market situation made it necessary for the nonprofit organizations to implement strategic management in their venture. The primary hurdles identified from the review are the funding and tax issues that made it necessary for the organizations to strategically manage their resources. Moreover, the theories reviewed above identify the process of planning, communicating, managing and leading unique organizations in the public trust. It identifies that the BSC uses the point of view through the lens of process. Similarly RDT implements it by managing the resources and SCM identifies usefulness through human relation. The Courtship and Marriage Customs of the Waray Essay Example
The Courtship and Marriage Customs of the Waray Paper THE COURTSHIP AND MARRIAGE CUSTOM OF THE WARAY J. Colima Bajado The Philippines as a whole abounds in quaint marriage customs and traditions. Written literatures from Fr. Pedro Chirino (1590s), Blair and Robertson, to Gregorio Zaide describe the pre-Spanish marriage customs of the Philippines. More writers like Fay Cooper Cole, John Finley, C. R. Moss and John Garvan have written on the courtship and marriage rituals of the various tribes in the country. On the marriage customs of the Warays, some vernacular writers like Iluminado Lucente and Juan Ricacho have written plays portraying the marriage customs and practices of the region. Younger generations in the Samar-Leyte region may not even know how their great grandfathers won the hands of their great grannies, in relation to the presentà ââ¬Å"wer na u, dito na meâ⬠à trend. According to the narrations of Msgr. Alberto Almarines (1960s), illiterate young men in the rural areas, particularly in the hinterland sitios, observe this way of courtship passed to them by their great grandparents. Since they cannot read and write, actions, signs, signals, and even mimicries are flashed as costumarily understood to mean love. The man takes out anà inarmidol (crisply starched) white handkerchief and waves it to the woman, who could only give concealed glances. Then the man will kiss the handkerchief and put it over his chest. This is done when the young man does not have the chance to talk to the girl. If the girl accepts the love offered, she smiles and nods. When she frowns, she declines the offered affection. And when her face is expressionless, she does not yet know the answer. When she accepts, the man will then ask her hand for marriage. When she shows indifference, he will either wait for the ight time or simply forget her. The Kulalisi Courtship This type of courtship commences as a game, and concludes for real. Kulalisià (sometimes spelledculalisi), is a game played after the nightly prayer for nine days ofà lamayà (wake). Unmarried men and women gather in the house of the deceased to say the prayers, after which, the kulasisi game follows to console the bereaved family. The kulalisi game is a battle of wits between men and women. One of the elders in the house will act asà Hadià (king) that will pair a man and a woman suspected or teased as sweethearts. The challenge to aà luwaà (verse) is cast by one who wins the draw using a shell calledà buskay. Then the ââ¬Å"luwaâ⬠or battle of words (somewhat like Balagtasan), and rhymes, and debates starts. If the challenger is a man and the challenged woman fails to outwit him, the reward is a ââ¬Å"make-believeâ⬠marriage solemnized by the Hadi. If the man is outwitted by the woman, he becomes the womanââ¬â¢s slave and will do whatever the woman desires to let him do, for that night. Most of the ââ¬Å"marriedâ⬠pairs inà culalisià games become real partners for life. This kind of courtship has been commonly practiced up to the early 1900s. Tthe courtship through Panharana (Serenading) Wooing a woman byà panharanaà is commonly practiced in the whole region up to the late 1990s; some even still practice this in other parts of the region, like Maydolong, Eastern Samar, up today. Serenading is a time-honored way of expressing oneââ¬â¢s love and adoration to the accompaniment of a guitar, violin or other string and wind instruments. Moonlight nights are the perfect time for serenade. A man singsà kundimanà (love song) that is rich in lyrical beauty, appreciation of nature and profound sentiment of affection. A suitor who knows how to play a guitar serenades his admired woman by himself, for this is a rapport in his singing of love songs. A group of men serenades when the suitor cannot accompany himself in singing his love songs. The songà Mituo Akoà (I Believe) is once a popular serenade song in the Cebuano speaking part of the region, while Iluminado Lucenteââ¬â¢sà Gihilom Koà (I Secretly Bear) in the Waray speaking parts. Whileà panharanaà is still practiced today, the town of Dagami in the province of Leyte once regulated its practice in the 1960s due to some stealing events resulted from serenading. While some were singing, others were stealing chickens, and other things. Serenading was then allowed from ten to twelve in the evening only. The Balata Courtship This type of courtship is one of the queer ways of wooing. This traditional practice is resorted to by the rich families. This is very common especially in the ââ¬Å"capitalâ⬠of the different provinces of the region such as Tacloban, Carigara, Palo, Biliran, Ormoc, Catarman, Calbayog, Catbalogan, Maasin and Borongan. Inà balata, the parents of the bride and the groom agree to have their children married in accordance with their arrangement. It is the custom of the upperclass families through their exclusive formed groups. They hold week-end parties among themselves by turns. In the midst of the merry making, especially when they are already a bit tipsy, the betrothal of their children takes place. Although often started as a joke, theà balataà eventually becomes a serious matter involvingà amor propioà andà palabra de honor. Usually, it is the parents of the male child who makes the proposal to the parents of the girl to have their children married when they reach the marriageable age. They mutually plan and finance the wedding of their children, give equal dowries of property such as land, livestock, jewelry, and cash with which their children will start their married life. They also agree with the kind of wedding, the grandeur, and the bands to play music, and all other things to make the wedding memorable. The day of the wedding is usually scheduled on the day the boy reaches his sixteenth year. Not allà balataà betrothal are negotiated and agreed upon during drinking sprees. Most of ââ¬Å"balatasâ⬠results from the desire of both parties to insure the economic and financial stability of their children. The parents keep the betrothal of their children to themselves until the time comes when it is necessary to reveal it to their children. The betrothed are warned that refusal to comply with their pledge will bring their families dishonor and disgrace and the wrath of heaven will fall on them. Choice by parents This kind of courtship deprives young lovers from their right to choose their partners. The parents select their childrenââ¬â¢s life partners. Wealth and character or ââ¬Å"urbanidadâ⬠as the parents fondly stress are the factors their prospective sons and daughters-in-law should possess. The boyââ¬â¢s parents look around for the girls who meet their criteria. Their search for girls extends to other towns and places where their friends and acquaintances live. They mark their choices for observation and preliminary selection. The girlsââ¬â¢ parents base their selection on the same grounds. Their children are simply informed of their plans and tell them to abide to it. Usually, three possible candidates are chosen, the other two are reserves or alternatives. When they arrive at a choice, the courting begins. Courting through the Parents Courting a woman through her parents is another way of wooing. In this type of courting, the young man picks the girl and enlists the help of her parents. This is often resorted to when the girl does not reciprocate the boyââ¬â¢s feeling, or when her parents are very jealous. The young man and his parents will befriend the girlââ¬â¢s parents. The young man do manual works in the house of the girl, serves the girlââ¬â¢s parents, and do everything to please them. He put his best foot forward to impress, and eventually, gain their admiration and sympathy. A Back to Back Overview Perchance, it is not really the type of courtship that matters, after all. It is the sound of love that makes two lovers dance in harmony to its tune. As Rachel Gordo Maravillaââ¬â¢sà sidayà says: Bisââ¬â¢ anu pa iton nga kaporma, Bisââ¬â¢ pa it yinaknan nagkakairiba, Kay iton karuyag boot sidngon, Amo manta gihapon. Bisan hin-o ha bug-os nga kalibutan, Tanan masayaw, Kon tukran na an kasing-kasing Han sonata Han Gugma. J. HCA Final Paper Essay Example
HCA Final Paper Essay Example HCA Final Paper Essay HCA Final Paper Essay Many people tend to be blind when It comes down to the Issues at hand. I fall Into the statistic when It comes to being uninsured r not having enough coverage, it discourages people to seek the treatment that they need because they are scared of what is going to happen or if they are going to receive proper care like every other individual or treated differently because they dont have insurance or money to pay it can be as simple as not being able to afford the treatment itself. I chose this particular topic to write my final assignment because I can honestly say that I can relate to this issue and it is a serious problem that has been facing Americans for a while now. In this essay I plan on talking about everything there is to know about this issue hat has been facing the US today. We all know that people being uninsured or even undesired has been a serious issue for many years now, we will discuss the major problems that are related to this issue, I will give a full detailed history of this Issue we will start from the beginning I believe that It Is Important that people know where the issue started and see how far we have come, I will discuss this problem and I will also talk about this issue in another country other than the US, we need to find out if the problem is worse in the US or outside of the US. We will discuss the stakeholders hat are involved and what they have done to address the issue so far. I will be talking about the Patient Protection and Affordable care act of 2010 because I feel that it is an important topic with the subject that I have chosen. I will also provide my own personal recommendations on what I feel should be done in the future as well as what the stakeholders should do to make these recommendations successful. I know that this is very Important and is a subject that I can relate to because I myself have been uninsured for a long time. I would Like to share my own personal experience on the Issue at hand, I think that It Is Important to have a view from both sides. According too trans-union healthcare survey 97 percent of healthcare administrators, from 22 different hospitals in 15 different states stated that they have in an increase of bad debt and has caused straining on charity programs. It has become apparent that hospitals are working to ensure that they can balance a fine line between providing quality care while also being fiscally responsible. Rod Bazaar, Cot 20, 2008 P: 2836) We are finding that more and more hospitals are cooking to healthcare revenue cycles and financial products to decrease bad debt and match more uninsured patients with financial assistance (Rod Bazaar, Cot 20, 2008 P: 2836) I believe that this is not right because people cant afford health care but still need treatment so with the system they are being put further into debt than they were initially. We know that the history when it c omes to people being uninsured and undesired has been around for decades I want to show you the history behind trying to get healthcare passed. It was in the earlier 20th century during the regressive era President Theodore Roosevelt was the very first American president to stand up against the cause of health insurance his proposal was that every American would have health insurance this was opposed and defeated by the American Medical Association (AMA), It was then during the Great Depression and after world war II when President Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman again took on the task of universal health insurance, it was defeated again by the AMA a result of this was tax favored private insurance. In the civil rights era of the sasss President Lyndon Johnson secured passage of Medicare and Medicaid which would offer coverage to all senior citizens as well as some poor over the opposition of the AMA, the Federal government would administer Medicare for seniors and states would administer Medicaid for some of the poor. During the sasss, the national debates focused on the different visions to cover all Americans, offered by President Richard Nixon and Senator Ted Kennedy. President Onions efforts were built on the model of competitive private insurance relying on mandates on employers and individuals. It was supported by insurers and the AMA. His efforts were supported by organized labor. No compromise emerged, and both efforts failed. In the asss, President Bill Clinton developed a proposal to cover all Americans built on the managed competition approach, building coverage through a mandate on private employers and requirements that health insurers offer to all Americans regardless of their pre- existing conditions. These efforts failed. Again in 2006, Democrats in the Massachusetts legislature and then Governor Mitt Rooney agreed on a bi-partisan compromise combining employer, employee, government and individual responsibility. This was the blueprint for the Affordable Care Act that Congress considered, debated and ultimately approved. Lastly it was in March of 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. It offers coverage for every American through employers, through the Exchanges and through Medicaid. It was supported by many unions, employers, insurers, doctors, hospitals, and drug manufacturers. It was opposed by some on the left because it was not single payer and did not contain the public option (Medicare) in the Exchange. It was opposed by some on the right because it was considered socialized medicine. Lucien Willis, 2012) I would have to say that we can see with the text above that many different Presidents on many different occasions have tried to stand up for the cause of health insurance for every American and they failed it wasnt until Just recently when the or the Obama Care was passed which allows people to get insurance not based on their pre-existing conditions. The P. P. A. C. A is considered to be a historic achievement given its history of trying to be passed on several different occasions by other presidents. (Cults, H. A. Young, K. M. (2012) but in my own personal opinion I loud have to say that from where we started and where we have come is a long way I believe that the passing of the Patient Protection and Affordable care act of 2010 will prove to be successful and provide people with the insurance as well as the care that they need and deserve. I would like to now discuss how another countrys health care system is compared to that of the U. S we are going to talk about Canada, I have done a search and found that Canadas healthcare system is made up of groups of socialized health insurance plans that provides coverage to all Canadian citizens. Under the healthcare system citizens are provided preventive care, medical treatments from a primary care physician, as well as access to hospitals. All Canadian citizens qualify for health insurance coverage regardless of their prior medical history, income, or even their way of living. With this amazing medical coverage it is shown that Canada has one of the highest life expectancies and one of the lowest infant death rates. Although everyone is covered through the Canadian system by no means does it mean that it is free we know that in this world nothing is free because he funds would have to come from somewhere because in order to be a successful business or a professional provider hospitals and doctors need to paid from somewhere. We know that is funded by both the provincial and federal levels, the financing of healthcare is provided via taxation from both corporate and personal income taxes. (Canadian-healthcare. Org 2004-2007) Even though the U. S healthcare system has come a long way I can say that it will never rank with the Canadian healthcare system because in Canada people are covered no matter what from birth until death it is said that under Obama care 31 Million Americans will still be uninsured, I believe that in my own personal opinion that the US healthcare system will not be fixed overnight this type of problem which is one of the biggest that America has ever seen has been around for decades and in order for these issues and problems to be solved the US will need time to go through everything and get people the help that they need, Some people say that the US will not provide people with insurance because they cannot afford it and I have to say that this is false because the government helps people out with Medicare and Medicaid for elderly people who no longer can work and people who are poor. Although they cannot help every poor person they are trying their best to make it better, I know a girl who got fired f rom her Job and signed up for Obama care she pays very little for coverage for her 3 person household I know that they are willing to help in any way that they can and they also help people find coverage without breaking their bank accounts. We will talk about the major stakeholders that are involved in the healthcare industry although the list goes on and on we will talk about the more important ones in this assay. We know that first and foremost among the stakeholders are the patients we the patients are the backbone to the industry because we are the ones who consume the services, with that being said many patients are concerned by issues of costs and quality of the services being provided and the patients who are uninsured and influential role and are one of the Major stakeholders in the healthcare industry not only because they are paying for a high proportion of the costs but because they are taking on more proactive roles in determining what those costs should be. The latherer providers which could range from doctors, surgeons, to dentists are the core of the industry and have the most to do with the actual process and the outcomes with the service that they are providing the service that they provider are done at hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Federal and state governments are also considered to be major stakeholders in healthcare they have been dominant authorities the government not only serves as payers but they also serve as regulators and providers through public hospitals, local health departments, and other facilities. The final stakeholder that I will be discussing is the insurance companies as they have been a major stakeholder for a long time even though we see the traditional plans are rapidly being replaced by managed care plans they still have much to do with the healthcare industry. Cults, H. A. Young, K. M. 2012) While we are on the insurance discussion we have read about how before people were denied coverage bec ause of their preexisting conditions and with the new Obama care in effect insurance companies are no longer allowed to deny a person coverage because of that reason and in my own personal opinion I feel that it should eave always been that way, no person on the planet is perfect we all have issues and health problems at one point in each and every one of our lives we end up sitting in an emergency room so why should we all be treated different. There are so many other stakeholders involved that we didnt discuss and they include: Long term care, mental health, volunteer agencies and facilities, health professional education and training, health industry organizations, research facilities and alternative therapies. Cults, H. A. Young, K. M. (2012) The Patient protection and affordable care act was signed by President Bark Obama in March, 2010 the law puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that rolled out over the past four years. As of 2014 all Americans have access to affordable health insurance people who are considered to middle or low income families will receive tax credits that cover a significant portion of their cost of coverage. The Affordable care Act will allow millions of Americans to gain coverage. The law implements strong reforms that prohibit insurance companies from refusing to sell coverage or renew policies based on an individuals pre-existing condition. The law also prohibits new plans and existing group plans from imposing annual dollar limits on the coverage they receive. Insurers will also be prohibited from dropping or limiting coverage if the individual participated in clinical trials. Starting in 2014 Americans will be able to purchase their insurance through the marketplace. Americans who earn less than 133% of the poverty level which individuals would be around 14,000 and 29,000 for a family of four will be eligible to enroll in Medicaid states will receive 100% federal funding for the first three years and 90 percent in the years that follow. (has. Gob, 2014) I know that we are all hoping for the best when it comes to the future of healthcare myself being a person who went uninsured for years and years because I feared that I couldnt afford coverage, and every Job I had lead me to a dead end, I feared going to hospitals or even dentists and ended up letting my health deteriorate. I am hoping long and happy life. I Just know that with the P. P. A. C. A it will bring a lot of people relief knowing that there is some light at the end of the tunnel because I know that I am not alone when it comes to denying myself healthcare because of the cost. When I was 18 1 was kicked off my mothers health insurance it made it hard for me because I needed to see a doctor, since being kicked off I have put my own medical issues to the side I have been diagnosed with a heart condition known as MAP or Material Valve Prolapsed I went to the ERE thinking I was having a heart attack I was only 23 years old, I was notified with what I had and have never had a follow up because I know I simply just cannot afford it. I know how to treat the pain myself but I know that I need to go see a professional. For being only 27 years old I have many health issues that I wouldnt have at my age but I know that whatever life throws at me I will be able to handle it. I am very grateful for the new Obama Care act because I am finally able to get coverage that I need to get my health on the right track. I would have to say that with everything that I have learned over the last five weeks in this course my recommendations for patients would be to go and get coverage, there is coverage available and I wouldnt recommend waiting any longer it is not worth your health to sit around and do nothing because it might be too late. My recommendations to capitals would be to make your patients feel more welcomed even if they are uninsured and undesired they are people and deserve the same care and attention as any other person we all get sick we all need treatment. To the providers I have to recommend that you provide the same treatment to each and every person who walks through the door Just because they cannot necessarily afford it doesnt mean they dont deserve it. To the government I would recommend that you make sure you help the people who truly need it help people who are not able to help themselves, I know that the government is trying to get people the help that the need UT in my own personal opinion I believe that something should have been done a long time ago. I hope that they dont stop here they need to keep going and never give up we need to have a strong support system and we need something to believe in. We have covered everything there is to know in this essay we have talked about the history of the problem with healthcare in the U. S and how it dated back to the great depression era, We have discussed the issue surrounding the uninsured and undesired population, we have talked about how healthcare differs in Canada compared to the healthcare in the US, we have went over what stakeholders are involved as well as the roles each stakeholder plays in the healthcare system, we have discussed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and what it entails, as well as providing my own personal recommendations. I know that healthcare is changing and believe that it is for the better good of everyone. I would like to say that I have enjoyed this course and have enjoyed getting to know about the Healthcare system.

AIDS Social Workers
Looks at the dangers, relationships with clients, treatment, socioeconomics, diagnosis, at-risk behavior, prevention, and public perceptions. This paper is an examination of the problems that the rising epidemic of HIV infection and AIDS poses to social workers, both as a direct issue in providing service to infected clients and as an indirect part of the overall job of social work. The prevalence of this devastating illness has had a profound effect on society as a whole. The consequences for social workers, however, are even greater, since the field services many of the patients most profoundly affected, either those who are suffering from advanced stages of the disease or those who are closely involved with the ailing. In order to provide the most effective service possible, social workers need to understand the stages of HIV and AIDS, the most current medical understanding of the ways in which HIV can be transmitted, some of the current treatments, and funding and other resources that are available to diagnosed.

Philosophy and Social Justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Philosophy and Social Justice - Essay Example According to the report findings unemployment usually happens when employers do not give a chance to people who are mere undergraduates to prove themselves at work, or when there is no one who y helps others get a job. A just society is not one where people would only selfishly think that each one should struggle for himself. A just society is where people struggle not only for themselves but for others as well. Lastly, racism only exists if there is a selfish view that oneââ¬â¢s race is more superior to another. In short, the just society that I imagine is one without selfishness. As the discussion stresses the philosophy of Confucius is the means to achieve my idea of a just society. According to Confucius, ââ¬Å"If [the people] be led by virtue, and uniformity sought to be given them by the rules of propriety, they will have the sense of honor and respect, and moreover will become goodâ⬠.à This philosophy known as ethical humanism is one where what is being drawn out is the natural kindness in people. This philosophy is based on the idea of Ren, ââ¬Å"a humane principle rooted in empathy and feeling for othersâ⬠.à This means that society operates by learning the rules of propriety. If such rules are learned, what happens is that the people who learn these rules naturally develop honor and respect for themselves and for each other.à If this philosophy of Confucius is taught to and instilled in the youth of the society, this society will most likely become what is ideally just.
